The Clinical and Radiological Observation of Vitamin D deficiency Rickets


Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a systemic disease resulting from deficiency of vitamin D in the diet or from lack of exposure to ultraviolet rays. It is osteomalacia, but, ocurring during endochondral bone growth.
This is a clinical and radiological study of 23 cases who visited our Chonnam National University Hospital from January 1975 to December 1980.
The results were summarized as follows
1. In spite of economic development of our country, annual incidence was not decreased.
2. The common chief complaints were bowleg and difficulty in standing and walking.
3. Serum phosphorus was decreased in 19 cases(83%) and normal range in 4 cases(17 % )
4. There were demineralization and prominent trabeculation of shafts of radius and ulna, disappearance of zone of provisional calcification, and widening, cupping and fraying of distal shaft ends of radius and ulna in all cases.
5. Average radii of cuppings in distal shaft ends of radius. and ulna were 27mm end 17mm respectively.
